24th Annual Okto Beerfest Supports the Nebraska State Stroke Association

On October 7th, Gateway Sertoma Club hosted its 24th event to raise funds and awareness for the Nebraska State Stroke Association.  In 2016, Gateway Sertoma Club’s Okto Beerfest raised more than $16,000 to support the Nebraska State Stroke Association.  The funds will be used to continue stroke awareness programs and education throughout the state of Nebraska.

Each fall, Gateway Sertoma teams up with other Lincoln Sertoma Clubs for the annual Okto Beerfest event.  In 2017, we will once again host this at Lancaster Event Center on September 28th.  Please consider joining us for a fun event, to help support the Nebraska State Stroke Association.

Lincoln’s Gateway Sertoma Club and Tabitha came together on June 3, welcoming nearly 200 golfers to play for a cause. Proceeds from the 14th annual golf event brought in almost $60,000 to support Tabitha Meals on Wheels.

“Gateway Sertoma Club has been honored to be a part of this event in support of Tabitha and the Meals on Wheels program,” said Charlie Huff, Gateway Sertoma golf committee member. “Our members are dedicated to this fundraiser because they recognize the extraordinary impact Tabitha Meals on Wheels has in Lincoln.”

The proceeds donated from the event will help provide meals for 550-plus individuals each day through Tabitha Meals on Wheels. Seventy percent of recipients are unable to afford the $5.75 cost of the meal. As Tabitha has made a point to turn no one in need away from a warm meal, contributions like those from Gateway Sertoma are instrumental in keeping the program in operation.

Stan Hart Receives French Legion of Honor Medal

The French Legion of Honor medal is the highest honor that France can bestow upon those who have achieved remarkable deeds for France.

The award was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, and two brave Lincoln veterans now have the honor of wearing the French Legion of Honor Medal.

Private 1st Class Frank Chambers was a member of the Army’s 75th Infantry Division, “In the Battle of the Bulge the snow was this deep and the temperature was way below zero and we lost many more troops with frozen feet.”

1st Lt. Stan Hart was a fighter pilot in the Army Air Corp, “I have a copy of every mission. You know once you got back from a mission you were briefed immediately.”

Despite living just 5 blocks away from each other on the east side of Lincoln, these two French Legion of Honor Medal winners had never met before this day.

Frank describes what he did to earn the honor, “After the Battle of the Bulge was completed there was a break through down near the Swiss border. Hitler had tried to start something and they were running over the French Army so they sent my division, my 75th down to help out the French Army and in appreciation for being a part of that action they awarded a French Legion of Honor.”

This prestigious honor means a lot to Stan for a couple different reasons, “Knowing that there’s a limited number of these and I guess just the fact that started by Napoleon. It’s kind of a humbling feeling I think.”

12th Annual – Gateway Sertoma Supports Tabitha Meals on Wheels

Lincoln’s Gateway Sertoma Club and Tabitha—your answer for Elder Care—joined forces on June 6, welcoming more than 200 golfers to play for a cause. Proceeds from the 12th-annual golf event brought in more than $53,000 in support of Tabitha Meals on Wheels.

In true tournament style, the event featured a four-person scramble, hole games, prizes and the media challenge where the Lincoln Journal Star team re-claimed the coveted media trophy.

“Gateway Sertoma Club has been honored to be a part of this tournament benefiting Meals on Wheels for the past 11 years,” said Charlie Huff, Gateway Sertoma golf committee member. “Our members are dedicated to this fundraiser because they recognize the extraordinary impact Tabitha Meals on Wheels has in Lincoln.”

Tournament proceeds will provide more than 9,200 hot, nutritious meals to Tabitha Meals on Wheels clients. The program serves more than 500 meals per day to those in need. Seventy percent of recipients are unable to afford the $5.75 cost of the meal, and Tabitha is committed to saying yes to all those in need regardless of their financial situation.

“Partnerships like those with Gateway Sertoma are why Tabitha Meals on Wheels can continue to operate,” said Christie Hinrichs, Tabitha president and CEO. “We are truly blessed by the hard work, dedication and commitment this group has shown to Tabitha Meals on Wheels.”

Gateway Sertoma was founded as a service club over 50 years ago. The group’s mission is “service to mankind”, motivating members to volunteer service and fundraising for community programs in need. Twelve years ago, the group combined its love of service with its love of golf by hosting a charity golf tournament. Members turned to Tabitha to help operate the tournament, with proceeds donated first to Tabitha Hospice and later to Tabitha Meals on Wheels.

As a nonprofit organization serving 28 Nebraska counties, Tabitha’s love embraces a society where everyone is valued and empowered to live life to the fullest, with compassionate at-home support, innovative living communities, exceptional rehabilitation, health care and hospice services. For answers to all your aging questions, tune in to Tabitha’s Answers on Aging, airing each Saturday morning, 9:30 a.m. on KFOR 1240 AM, or subscribe to Tabitha’s quarterly magazine, The Answer, at www.Tabitha.org

11th Annual Gateway Sertoma golf event raises nearly $45,000 for Tabitha Meals on Wheels

Lincoln’s Gateway Sertoma Club and Tabitha joined forces to welcome more than 160 golfers to HiMark Golf Course in June, and raised nearly $45,000 in support of Tabitha’s Meals on Wheels. The 11th annual event featured a four-person scramble, hole games, prizes and a media challenge.

“Gateway Sertoma Club is once again honored to be a part of this tournament for Tabitha Meals on Wheels, now 11 years and running,” said Charlie Huff, Gateway Sertoma Golf committee member. “This is our largest fundraiser, and our members really work hard on it. We support Tabitha because Meals on Wheels is such a terrific program that benefits Lincoln’s seniors.”

Tournament proceeds totaled an amount that provides more than 7,500 hot, nutritious meals to Tabitha Meals on Wheels clients. The program serves more than 400 meals per day to those in need. About 70% of the recipients are unable to afford the $5.75 cost of the meal. As Tabitha has made a point to turn away no one in need, contributions like those from Gateway Sertoma are instrumental in keeping the program in operation.

“Partnerships with great organizations like Gateway Sertoma are why Tabitha Meals on Wheels can continue to operate,” said Christie Hinrichs, Tabitha president and CEO. “We are truly blessed by the hard work, dedication and commitment this group has shown for Tabitha Meals on Wheels.”

Gateway Sertoma was founded as a service club more than 50 years ago. The group’s mission is “service to mankind”, motivating members to volunteer service and fundraising for community programs in need.

Ten years ago, the group merged a love of service with an affinity for golf by hosting a charity golf tournament. Members turned to Tabitha to help operate the tournament, with proceeds benefiting first Tabitha Hospice and later Tabitha Meals on Wheels.

The KLKN Channel 8 Eyewitness News team re-claimed the media trophy in the Media Challenge at this year’s tournament.

The Gateway Sertoma Club of Lincoln recently presented a $35,000 check to support Tabitha Meals on Wheels. The check was given at Tabitha’s annual celebratory breakfast hosting members of the Sertoma Club following its 10th annual golf tournament.

“We are proud and humbled by yet another generous gift from this incredibly generous organization,” said Christie Hinrichs, Tabitha president and CEO. “Gateway Sertoma has been a loyal partner and benefactor for many years, and the giving spirit of its membership does not go unnoticed, particularly by the more than 400 clients who receive Tabitha Meals on Wheels each and every day.”

Tournament proceeds came from a variety of corporate sponsors, individual donors, silent auction items and a record 160-plus golfers. KLKN-TV took home the trophy and bragging rights as the winner of the tournament’s annual corporate media challenge. Next year’s tournament is June 7, 2013.

Operating 365 days per year, Tabitha Meals on Wheels is the oldest—and today, the only—such program in Lincoln. Its volunteer drivers deliver hot, nutritious meals to Elders in their homes and provide a critical safety check for seniors in the community. More than 70 percent of Tabitha Meals on Wheels recipients cannot afford the $5.50 per meal cost, and it is only because of the generosity of donors like the Gateway Sertoma Club that Tabitha can continue to say ‘yes’ to all in need, regardless of financial resources.

Gateway Sertoma has given back to the Lincoln community for 50 years. The 50-member club has raised more than $1 million for organizations including Tabitha, the Barkley Center for Scholarships and the Nebraska Hearing Aid Bank.

Gateway Sertoma Club of Lincoln members presented Tabitha Health Care Services President and CEO, Christie Hinrichs, with a check for $30,000 to support Tabitha Meals on Wheels. The proceeds came directly from the group’s 9th annual golf tournament on June 10.

The generous donation will provide for more than 5,400 hot meals to Tabitha Meals on Wheels clients. The program serves an average of over 400 meals a day to Lincoln individuals who can no longer prepare a hot meal. Seventy percent of clients are unable to pay the $5.50 cost for a meal because of financial constraints.

Proceeds from the tournament were raised by sponsors, donors, silent auction items and a record 128 golfers. Also involved were teams from the Lincoln Journal Star and KLKN-TV who competed head to head in the Corporate Media Challenge. KLKN-TV came out on top to earn bragging rights and the tournament trophy.

Next year’s 10th anniversary Sertoma Golf Tournament to benefit Tabitha Meals on Wheels is scheduled for June 8, 2012.
